St. George Reef, California's most remote lighthouse reopens to the public

The lighthouse stands atop a sheer rock surrounded by nothing but the cold, churning Pacific, six miles off the foggy coast of Del Norte County.

Terrified dogs found abandoned at East Bank Lighthouse, UK

Two dogs were found "wet through to the skin and freezing" after being abandoned at a remote lighthouse.

East Bank, UK - Jeremy Halls 

The "terror-type" dogs, thought to be about two years old, were discovered at Sir Peter Scott Lighthouse in Sutton Bridge, Lincolnshire, at about midnight on 25 January, the RSPCA said.

Lighthouse fans find their way to the Fresnel Lens

On Saturday evening dozens of Vineyarders gathered at the Martha's Vineyard Museum to witness a rare event that in the 19th century and early 20th century was a nightly occurrence.

Gay Head's Fresnel Lens, MA - Jeremy D'Entremont 

Called Keeping the Light, the event was a celebration, and lighting, of the 170-year-old Fresnel lens that operated in the Gay Head lighthouse for almost 100 years, beginning in 1856. The lens was retired in 1952 and has been in the care of the museum ever since.

Trivia Night will benefit New Dungeness Lighthouse, WA

To kick off the countdown to America's 250th anniversary, the New Dungeness Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and George Washington Speaks will host a community Trivia Night fundraiser from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 28.

Restoration work begins later this month at Split Rock Lighthouse, MN

The Minnesota Historical Society is beginning restoration work at Split Rock Lighthouse. The months long project will include replacing damaged masonry and installing sensors to monitor moisture data.

Split Rock Lighthouse was built in the aftermath of a late-November 1905 storm that wrecked dozens of ships on Lake Superior.

Keepers of the light: The women of Point Pinos Lighthouse, CA

When the Point Pinos Lighthouse became operational in 1855, it was a grey granite in a sea of sand, twisted trees and howling wind.

Point Pinos, CA - National Park Service 

Grizzly bears were known to stumble through the grounds, and provisions were brought to the facility by a mule-drawn wagon that took almost a full day to plow through the sands and windswept terrain from Monterey to the light station.
