Feds complete Watch Hill (RI) Lighthouse transfer, and public access guarantees aren't included

The official transfer of the property deed to a private nonprofit comes after months of delays and legal research that didn't result in public access protections to the historic property and popular fishing grounds.

The US General Services Administration said this week it has finalized the transfer of the historic Watch Hill Lighthouse to a private nonprofit and officially executed the deed to the property for its new owner, the Watch Hill Lighthouse Keepers Association.

New London Maritime Society view for Old Saybrook's Lynde Point (CT) Lighthouse, part of federal giveaway

Old Saybrook - The New London Maritime Society has thrown its hat in the ring for the federal government's giveaway of the iconic Lynde Point Lighthouse.

Split Rock (MN) Lighthouse closes Jan. 1, 1969

The lighthouse opened in the summer of 1910 to guide bulk ore ships sailing near Lake Superior's rocky coast.

In the early years of the twentieth century, iron ore shipments on Lake Superior doubled and redoubled. United States Steel's bulk ore carrier became "the greatest exclusive freight-carrying fleet sailing under one ownership in the world."

Old Point Loma (CA) Lighthouse at Cabrillo National Monument to close temporarily for restoration

The Old Point Loma Lighthouse, which provided visitors with an inside look at what it's like to be a lighthouse keeper, will close temporarily for restoration, National Park Service (NPS) officials said.

From Jan. 8-18, park crews will perform interior restoration at Cabrillo National Monument's historic lighthouse, including painting and other minor repairs, NPS said in a news release Thursday.

Why Is There A Coyote At Thomas Point (MD) Light?

Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is a popular piece of scenery for Bay boaters to cruise past (and photograph). Anyone who gets close to the lighthouse in the new year may find something unexpected. No, a dog has not taken up residence at Thomas Point. It's a life-sized, rather realistic looking coyote decoy. And the lighthouse manager says it's working.

Updates coming to Mission Point (MI) Lighthouse

More parking, new boardwalks, plus beach stairs and a telescope are among improvements for the Mission Point Lighthouse, north of Traverse City.

Lots of (Delightful) Lighthouse Lies: Oregon Coast Lighthouse with the Tallest Tales

It's partially age, it's partially just easy prey: lighthouses are ripe for a good ghost story. This is very true on the Oregon coast, especially at Newport's larger sentinel, the Yaquina Head Lighthouse.

Ghost tales swirl about it like, well, ghosts in an iconic, '80s comedy flick about spooks. It's the tallest in the state (93 feet), beating Port Orford's Blanco Light by a bit, and it has the tallest tales.

Iconic Old Field Point (NY) Light Station Nominated For Historic Registry

A nearly 200-year-old light station with a still-functioning lighthouse on Long Island is being considered to join the State and National Registers of Historic Places, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced.

Cape May Lighthouse, #4 in Best Things To Do in Cape May

Built in 1859 and opened to the public in 1988, the Cape May Lighthouse has welcomed more than 2.5 million visitors to date. Travelers who scale the 199 steps to the top of the lighthouse will be rewarded  with panoramic oceanfront views. Those who would rather stay on solid ground can enjoy the Oil House, which contains a visitor center and a museum shop with souvenirs.
