Island to close for St. Mary's (UK) lighthouse restoration work

An island, lighthouse and causeway will close to the public while renovation works take place.

Whitley Bay's St. Mary's Lighthouse and its buildings will be repaired and painted, meaning it will shut from Monday until mid September.

Every year a federal program works to find caretakers for historic buildings, and a lighthouse on Lake Superior is now available at no cost to a government agency or a nonprofit.

The Superior Harbor South Breakwater South Breakwater Light in Douglas County, WI, was made available by the US General Services Administration at no cost to eligible entities as part of a federal disposal program from the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000.

A historic Lake Superior lighthouse that a Californian won at auction five years ago with dreams of converting it into a quiet getaway- and possibly even a vacation rental- is now being offered for free to a government agency or nonprofit that agrees to maintain it.

Cape Hatteras (NC) celebrates 25th anniversary of the lighthouse's journey

Twenty-five years ago on Monday, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse began its journey.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse would travel 2,900 feet starting on June 17, 1999, to avoid saltwater rotting its yellow pine timber foundation and accommodate the shifting shoreline.

Beavertail Lighthouse (RI) deed in Jamestown to be transferred

US Senator Jack Reed is set to transfer the deed of the historic Beavertail Lighthouse next week to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

First erected in 1749 and rebuilt as a 68-foot tower in 1856, the Beavertail Lighthouse faces south toward the Rhode Island Sound and the exit of Narragansett Bay.

The Hog Island Shoal Lighthouse is in dire need of repairs, and the US Coast Guard is urging its owner to step up.

150 years ago this week: The beginnings of the Currituck Beach (NC) Light Station

One hundred and fifty years ago, on June 19, 1874, at the Currituck Beach Light Station "the driving of the piles for the foundation was commenced."
