Paint removal underway at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, NC

The black-and-white diagonal stripes that make the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse an iconic landmark are disappearing - at least for now.

Cape Hatteras, NC - Don Bowers

Roughly eight months into an extensive restoration project, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse already looks like a different structure, with a tower of scaffolding and a new temporary lens lighting up the night. However, this next phase in the project may be the most eye-catching and noticeable change yet.

A Lighthouse is named Maine's most iconic landmark, but is it the right one?

Every single day, there's a travel blog of food critic releasing a new list talking about the best places to visit or the best places to eat across the country. Maine should be proud that the state is regularly featured on these lists. Vacationland is home to top-tier restaurants, scenic destinations and beyond.

Bass Harbor Head, ME - John Young

But occasionally, some of the travel blogs make a choice that seems particularly odd. On the surface, that choice would seem to make sense but goes against everything that people who live in the state have come to know. And it's happened again.

Saving The Last Lighthouse In Galveston - Bolivar Point, TX

The ferry ride to Bolivar Peninsula in Galveston County in the first time in months I've stepped out in the daylight and not immediately made a rude gesture a the oppressive sun. The air over Galveston Bay is a good ten degrees cooler than the asphalt oven of Houston, and it's hard to feel anything but joy while watching adorably tiny dolphins dance in the boat's wake.

Boliver Point, TX - USLHS archive

The Bolivar Point Lighthouse watches over the whole scene in the distance as it has done since 1872. The cast iron tower stands 117 feet, making it the tallest lighthouse of the five left in Texas and well above average for American lighthouses overall. It is the last lighthouse left in the Galveston area.
